EVENT DATES: 18 - 25 JUL 1999

EVENT TITLE: Importation Biological Control of Midwestern Pests

LOCATION: Montpellier, France (USDA-ARS European Biological Control Lab - EBCL)

GROUP: The Midwest Institute for Biological Control

EVENT NOTES: The 1999 Midwest Institute for Biological Control will be held in Montpellier, France, at the USDA-ARS European Biological Control Lab (EBCL). We also will use facilities at French research agencies on the Agropolis campus. The Institute is designed for graduate students, advanced workers or other biological control specialists. The 1999 Institute will run for five days and will include both classroom and field aspects of biological control. The course will be offered in English.

The topic will be primarily importation biological control, but we plan to visit a lab at Antibes, where there is ongoing research with Trichogramma and its use in augmentation. Lectures and field collecting will center around biological control of temperate insect pests, but a significant amount of time will be devoted to some of the current weed projects at EBCL.

The Midwest Institute for Biological Control is an ongoing educational project developed by members of the North Central (USA) Regional Committee on Biological Control of Pests (NCR-125). Courses are taught by biological control specialists within the North Central region as well as invited specialists from outside the region. Approximately 200 students have participated in the eight previous Institute courses held annually since 1991. This year's instructors are: Dr. Robert O'Neil, Purdue University; Dr. John Obrycki, Iowa State University; and Dr. Robert Wiedenmann, Illinois Natural History Survey. We also will take advantage of the local expertise at EBCL for lectures and field projects.

Cost is ESTIMATED at $1000 (US), which includes round-trip airfare from Chicago, hotel, two meals per day, in-country transportation, tuition and all course materials. Students will be responsible for the cost of most evening meals. Students have the option of extending their stay beyond July 25, but must make those arrangements with course coordinators before April 15. Final costs will be determined by early May, 1999. Course enrollment is limited to 15 students, so please apply early!

EVENT DATES: 17 - 20 OCT 1999

EVENT TITLE: IOBC International Symposium - Evaluating Indirect Ecological Effects of Biological Control

LOCATION: Montpellier, France

GROUP: International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC)

EVENT NOTES: The aim of the symposium is to develop an improved ecological approach to biological control. It will consider all aspects of biological control, including "classical" and augmentative methods excluding genetic engineering. Taking lessons from the past, the symposium will focus on science based, theoretical and experimental approaches to assessment of biological control programs. It is not the purpose of the symposium to address procedures for risk analysis and national decision making on the use of biological control, but the outputs of the symposium should improve the scientific foundation for this process.

EVENT DATES: 30 OCT - 02 NOV 1999

EVENT TITLE: 1999 ANBP Conference

LOCATION: Orlando, Florida

GROUP: Association of Natural Bio-control Producers (ANBP)

EVENT NOTES: "Growing the Market for Biological Control" is the theme of the Association of Natural Bio-control Producers (ANBP) 1999 Conference. Conference focus is on marketing opportunities and strategies for the biological control production and distribution industry. Dates are Saturday, October 30, 1999 through Tuesday, November 2, 1999. Location is Orlando, Florida at the Grosvenor Resort Hotel.

In addition, there will be sessions on Epcot horticulture and pest management (featuring a site visit), linkages between ANBP and other biological control organizations and institutions, and development of American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) quality standards for natural enemies. Also featured is a description of the new Agricultural Research Service (ARS) National Biological Control Laboratory and a discussion on patenting and licensing government-funded research.

Tours include potential markets (a nursery and a horse farm) and research sites (University of Florida, USDA, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services). The Conference concludes with a marketing session and grower panel and a "Trade Show in Reverse" with one-on-one discussions between ANBP members and potential customers interested in purchasing and using natural enemies.

Social events include a welcoming reception, lunch at Disney Epcot and a Florida-style barbecue at the new Equestrian Center near the Ocala National Forest.
