CIC Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ): Go to top of page

We get lots of questions from consumers and we try to respond promptly to them all. However, sometimes we fall behind and you may have to wait. To help you get your answers quickly, we've collected a group of the most frequently asked questions which you can review and perhaps get answers to your questions immediately.

Consumer Questions: Go to top of page

The Consumer Information Center is only able to answer questions and provide information through the publications that are listed in our Catalog. We regret that we cannot respond specifically to your inquiry. However, listed below are suggestions for sources of information that may be of assistance.

The Consumer's Resource Handbook published by the Consumer Information Center gives listings of federal, state, and local government offices with consumer related responsibilities. The Handbook also includes Better Business Bureaus, and consumer contacts with corporations and trade associations, and it tells how to write an effective complaint letter.

Search the web. Start by searching CIC's web site for the information you need and then try one or more of the other search engines listed on our search page to comb the web.

Another valuable resource is your local library. The reference section is likely to have materials to help answer your questions, and the librarian can assist you in finding the information you need on any subject.

If you have a question about the Federal government, you can call the Federal Information Center at (800) 688-9889.

Consumer Problems: Go to top of page

Sorry, but the Consumer Information Center has no regulatory authority and does not directly handle consumer complaints. We do have lots of valuable info to help you get assistance and resolve your problem. The best source of this info is right here on our web site. The Consumer's Resources Handbook, a very popular 148-page reference tool contains advice, tips and thousands of addresses, phone numbers, and web sites of organizations which can help you.
