Training Materials on Source Water Protection Best Management Practices

EPA has developed training materials on best management practices (BMPs) and other measures for protecting drinking water supplies. The intended audiences for the materials are state government personnel, EPA regional staff, and staff of organizations that work directly with public water suppliers, communities, or Tribal governments to develop and implement local source water protection programs. Anyone with an interest in source water or watershded protection, however, is free to download and use the materials. The materials are dividided into two parts: a training module in Microsoft PowerPoint format at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/dwa/electronic.html and a series of more detailed source water protection "practices bulletins" by specific potential contaminant sources. Bulletins available include:

Storm Water Runnoff     Pet and Wildlife Waste
Septic Systems     Agricultural Fertilizer
Above Ground Storage Tanks Turfgrass and Garden Fertilizer Application
Underground Storage Tanks Large-Scale Application of Pesticides
Vehicle Washing Small-Scale Application of Pesticides
Livestock, Poutry, and Horse Waste Sanitary Sewer Overflows and Combined Sewer Overflows
Managing Small Quantity Chemical Use to Prevent Contamination of Drinking Water

EPA is conducting training courses using the source water protection BMP training materials for interested states, EPA Regions, and organizations such as the Ground Water Protection Council through the EPA Drinking Water Academy. If you are interested in sponsoring a training course, please contact James Bourne at 202-260-5557 or Steve Ainsworth at 202-260-7769.
