Contamination Prevention StrategyEPA is working with a broad spectrum of stakeholders to develop a national strategy for source water contamination prevention. This strategy will present a broad vision for source water contamination prevention and then focus on both the near term priorities for action within EPAs Water Program and the capacity and possible actions of stakeholders. In time, the strategy will embrace the tapestry of efforts undertaken by private, local, state and other federal programs to implement the vision that all sources of drinking water will be protected from potential sources of contamination. As part of the strategy, EPA is working closely with states and others to find a reasonable means to answer the question: are source water contamination prevention efforts making a contribution to public health. A draft of the strategy and a matrix of potential measures is available for comment. EPA has gotten comments from a wide range of stakeholders at meetings such as a 9/11/00 public meeting in Alexandria, VA and an open public meeting this spring in Savannah, GA. Most recently, many comments on the measurement matrix have been received and are now under consideration. Based on these comments, EPA is preparing options for management review and will finalize our plans to collect protection data at a later date. In the meanwhile, states are reporting progress of implementation of their Source Water Assessment Programs.
