Sanitary Survey Training

Course List

Sanitary Survey Training

Course Description: The objective of sanitary survey training is to develop the capabilities of individuals to conduct an effective and comprehensive review of a small public water system. The training teaches inspectors to apply basic scientific information and a working knowledge of the operation, maintenance, management, and technology of a water system to identify sanitary risks that may interrupt the multiple barriers of protection at a water system. The training addresses the eight essential elements of a sanitary survey as defined by the EPA/State Joint Guidance on Sanitary Surveys and the interim enhanced surface water treatment rule: water source; treatment; distribution system; finished water storage; pumps, pump facilities and controls; monitoring, reporting and data verification; water system management and operations; and operator compliance with State requirements. The course includes one or two field trips to water systems. Supplemental materials (i.e., a Learner’s Guide, inspector field guides, and videotapes) may be purchased to accompany the training.

Sponsored by: EPA Headquarters and EPA Region 6, Source Water Protection Branch, Dallas, Texas.

Intended for: The sanitary survey training course is designed for field staff responsible for inspecting and evaluating small water systems for sanitary risks and compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act.

Duration: Course content is flexible. The complete course, which addresses both surface water and ground water systems and includes two field trips, is 3-1/2 days. The course can be shortened to two days to focus only on surface water or ground water. It can also be combined with the introductory PWSS course for a four-day course. Finally, the source water or ground water courses may be combined with the introductory PWSS course for a three-day course.

Status: The course is offered as requested by States or Regions. Training given by Region 6 costs approximately $4,000 (costs of the Learner’s Guide and videos are extra). The requesting Region or State will need to cover the travel and per diem expenses of the trainers. The full training course provided by the contractor, which includes the supplemental materials, costs approximately $10,000.
