WHO IS?

Mark M. Bashor, Ph.D.

Since September 1989 Dr. Bashor has served as the Associate Administrator for Federal Programs with the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), U.S. Public Health Service. In this capacity he provides the leadership and direction and has overall responsibility for the development and operation of ATSDR's environmental public health programs at Federal hazardous waste sites (Department of Defense, Department of Energy, Department of Transportation, Department of Interior, and the Small Business Administration). From 1986 to 1989 Dr. Bashor served as ATSDR's first Director of the Office of Health Assessment, providing the leadership and direction for the development of the Agency's health assessment, health studies, and emergency response programs for workers and communities around hazardous waste sites. Dr. Bashor received his Bachelor of Science degree (1969) and Master of Science degree (1971) at the University of Tennessee, and his Doctorate in Biochemistry (1974) with emphasis on nutrition and toxicology from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. From 1974-76 he was a Postdoctoral Research Scholar at the University of California-San Diego; from 1976-1980 he was with the Letterman Army Institute of Research in San Francisco; and from 1980-85 he was with the Centers for Disease Control, joining ATSDR in 1985.
