1. GTMO squashes Y2K bug
Even though there was a great deal of anticipation of the stroke of midnight Jan. 1, Information Systems Department Head John Scott said Guantanamo Bay was not affected by the Y2K bug.

2. GTMO welcomes New Year’s baby
Sgt Darrell and Virginia Anne McDaniel became the proud parents of GTMO’s first baby of the new year Jan. 20.

3. GTMO holds first Candlelight March
More than 250 GTMO residents marched Jan. 17 in the base’s inaugural Candlelight March in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

4. GTMO wins AMC air terminal award
U.S. Naval Station GTMO was awarded the Navy-Operated Aerial Port Unit of the Year (small) in the annual Air Mobility Command Transportation Award competition in March.

5. NSGA, Company L decomission
On March 16, Naval Security Group Activity Guantanamo Bay and Company L, Marine Support Battalion held a joint decommissioning ceremony after 57 years of service in GTMO.

6. GTMO exceeds fund drive goal
GTMO surpassed last year’s Navy Marine Corps Relief Society fund drive goal of $17,600 after taking 445 pledges during the base’s three-day Radiothon fund raiser.

7. Naval Base holds change of command
CAPT Larry E. Larson turned over command of U.S. Naval Base Guantanamo Bay to CAPT Robert A. Buehn May 12.

8. Marine Barracks holds change of command
On June 29, Col Alfred J. Karle Jr. turned over command of Marine Barracks Ground Defense/Security Force GTMO to
Lt Col Jerry W. Sneed in a change of command ceremony.

9. CNO, MCPON visit GTMO
Chief of Naval Operations ADM Jay L. Johnson and Master Chief Petty of the Navy MMCM(SS/SW/AW) James L. Herdt praised the efforts of Sailors and Marines stationed at GTMO during their June 30 visit to the base.

10. U.S. Naval Hospital holds change of command
On Aug. 1, U.S. Naval Hospital GTMO hosted a change of command ceremony where CAPT Thomas R. McCoy turned over command to CAPT Albert J. Shimkus.

11. GTMO holds National Night Out
More than 700 residents took part in the National Night Out celebration Aug. 1.

12. British ship visits GTMO
The British Royal Navy guided missile destroyer HMS Cardiff (D 108) made a port call to GTMO the week of Aug. 11.

13. Marine Barracks redesignates in ceremony
Marine Barracks Ground Defense/Security Force was redesignated as Marine Corps Security Force (MCSF) Company
Aug. 30 during a ceremony on Marine Hill.

14. GTMO celebrates Navy birthday
GTMO celebrated the Navy’s 225th birthday Oct. 14 with a Navy Ball.

15. Naval Station wins awards
U.S. Naval Station GTMO won 1st place in the overseas category of the Environmental Stewardship Flagship and the Campaign Drug Free Flagship in the southeast regional competition of the Navy Community Service Program awards.

16. GTMO celebrates Marine birthday
GTMO held a Marine Corps ball Nov. 10 to celebrate the Marines 225th birthday.

17. Iguana Crossing opens on Chapel Hill
Many GTMO residents attended the grand opening of the Iguana Crossing coffee house Nov. 20 on Chapel Hill.
