GUANTANAMO BAY - On June 13, the Hospital defeated W.T. Sampson 21 10 to take the Womens Captains Cup softball tournament championship.
The dominating Hospital forced several errors and using smart base running sense, continued through out the game on a march for the title that would not be denied.
The W.T. Sampson Pirates, led by Margie Warren and pitcher Kelly Sison, fought through the tournament from the losers bracket but in the end were no match for the Hospital, who were led by bat of Donna Fabrao at the bat and pitching of Nancy Sison.
In Mens Captain Cup Softball, the Hospital won the championship the hard way by pushing through the losers bracket to meet NCTAMS/Dental in the championship.
With their backs against the wall and knowing they would have to beat NTCTAMS/Dental twice (NCTAMS/Dental was undefeated in the tourney), the Hospital routed NCTAMS/Dental in the first game 17 - 6 to force a deciding game two in the tournament.
In the deciding game, NTCTAMS/Dental was down 9 - 5 in the bottom of the 6th when then scored six runs behind the three run homer of Brad Kelly (2-2, 3 RBIs, 2 runs scored) which put them ahead 11-9 going into the last inning.
In the top of the 7th with the game and championship on the line, Clayton Helms (2-4, 4 RBIs, 1 run scored) stepped up to the plate with one away and two runners on and smacked a three-run homer to give Hospital a 12 - 11 lead going into the bottom of the last inning. Hospital grabbed three fly outs in the inning to secure the victory and give Hospital the championship.
In the game, Hospital was also led by James Champ (2-4, 1 RBI, 1 run scored) and pitcher Jay Wood who forced 17 fly outs in 39 batters faced.
