Base commander publishes philosophy

When a new commander takes over, it is worthwhile for members of the command to understand his framework of thought for decisions and for developing a vision. With that in mind, what follows are the principles that will guide me as Commander, U.S. Naval Base Guantanamo Bay:

MISSION - We are first and foremost a military organization. We must always be ready to execute our stated missions of forward presence, logistics, migrant operations and counter-drug operations to the best of our ability. Understand how you fit in the execution of those missions, and any others our national security requires, and do the job the best you can every day. To some, being forward deployed overseas in support of our nation may seem a hardship. To me it is an honor.

PEOPLE - Every individual deserves a basic level of human dignity. Actions that destroy dignity — personal violence, sexual harassment, racial or religious bias, age discrimination — are not tolerable. This is not political correctness…it is doing the right thing. The Golden Rule applies.

COMMUNICATION - Most problems boil down to a lack of communication. Make sure you are clear in direction, and make sure you understand direction to you. If you don’t understand, ask. Email and telephones are great, but you can’t beat looking someone in the eye when you talk. My door is open.

INNOVATION - The climate has never been better to be creative, to try new things. Don’t be constrained by “this is the way we’ve always done it.” Float ideas, ask questions. If the answer is no, ask why. It’s OK to try something new and have it fail. Make a difference.

ATTITUDE - A smile and a good dose of optimism make every day better. A sense of humor is as important to your health as a good fitness program. I strongly encourage both.

This is the philosophy that will guide me. I want Guantanamo Bay to be a place that serves as a key piece to our national security strategy, and is a pleasant and safe place to live. I could not be more happy to be here and I’m proud and excited to be part of Team GTMO.
