Consortia of American Businesses (CABNIS)

Updated June 1997

The Consortia of American Businesses in the Newly Independent States (CABNIS) was created to help U.S. firms establish business relations with entrepreneurs in the NIS. Through CABNIS, the U.S. Department of Commerce issued grants to 12 private-sector organizations to operate trade promotion centers in the NIS. The last of these grants expires at the end of 1997, although a number of the consortia will continue in operation after the expiration of their grants and will remain valuable contacts for NIS companies.

CABNIS grantees operate trade promotion offices in Russia and other NIS countries to support U.S. business and enhance private-sector development in the region. These offices represent the commercial interests of hundreds of U.S. firms that have expressed a desire to do business in Russia and the NIS. On-site, the grantees' office staffs provide a wide range of trade facilitation services to U.S. firms.

CABNIS grantees seek to promote effective relationships with Russian and NIS counterpart organizations and entrepreneurs. Each organization's staff works with NIS government decision makers, entrepreneurs, trade and professional associations, and academia to form meaningful business relationships, develop information on new trade opportunities, participate in the development of local industry and product standards, and promote U.S. investment in the private sector. Each CABNIS grantee conducts a wide variety of commercial and technical events that bring business people and academicians together on a frequent basis. By contacting the CABNIS grantees' local staff and pursuing involvement in CABNIS activities, Russian and NIS companies can build long-term business relationships with U.S. firms.
