Applying for Your U.S. Passport in the New York City Area

Here are some small suggestions that will make a big difference when it's time for you to get a passport in the New York City area....
  • Apply in the fall or winter. We're less busy and you'll get your passport faster.
  • Apply at least 3 months before you need to travel. This way, you'll have your passport in plenty of time to get visas if you need them for your trip and avoid the $35 expedite fee per application.
  • If you qualify, use the mail-in procedure. You wont have to wait on a queue and you'll get your passport in plenty of time for your trip. If you can say "yes" to ALL of the following, you can qualify for the mail-in procedure:
  • I can submit my most recent passport.
  • I was at least 16 years old when my most recent passport was issued.
  • I was issued my most recent passport less than 12 years ago.
  • I use the same name as on my most recent passport -OR- I have had my name changed by marriage or court order and can submit proper documentation to reflect my name change.

Pick up a mail-in application (DSP-82) at any of the acceptance facilities.

  • If you must apply in person, go to a neighborhood passport acceptance facility. There's probably one within walking distance of your home or office. (See the following list.)

New York Passport Agency ONLY accepts EMERGENCY applications from customers leaving within 2 weeks. All others must apply at an acceptance facility. If you have an emergency and must apply at the New York Passport Agency:

  • Leave children under age 13 home. Minors 13 through 17 years of age must apply in person and must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. ONLY people who are assisting you with your passport application, i.e., translators or witnesses, should accompany you.
  • You must have a ticket for foreign travel within 2 weeks, proof of citizenship, acceptable photo ID and 2 passport quality photographs.
  • If you meet the requirements for the mail-in procedure and emergency service, you can use our will call drop and pick-up your completed passport at 10:00 a.m. on the next business day.
