Focus of Trip
Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright will travel to Switzerland and Russia from January 29 - February 2, 2000.
The Secretary will attend the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland. She will meet with business representatives and world leaders, as well as support President Clinton's participation at the Davos meeting on January 29. Secretary Albright will address the Forum on January 30.
In Moscow, the Secretary will make an official visit to pursue bilateral agenda issues with Foreign Minister Ivanov and other Russian officials. The Secretary will discuss issues related to arms control, non-proliferation, Chechnya, economic reform and multilateral affairs.
Russia and the United States, as co-sponsors of the Middle East Peace Process, will co-chair a ministerial meeting of the Multilateral Steering Group on February 1 in Moscow. Secretary Albright will lead the U.S. delegation. The purpose of the meeting will be to mark the formal revival and resumption of work of the multilateral track of the peace process.
Secretary Albright intends to visit Croatia on Wednesday, February 2. While there she will meet with the new Prime Minister Ivica Racan and members of his cabinet. She also expects to meet briefly with the Speaker of the Parliament, and with both of the candidates in the February 7 Presidential election.
The U.S. regards the recent election for the Sabor (Parliament) and the current Presidential election as a major turning point for Croatia and the region. They represent a significant consolidation of democracy in Croatia, send an important signal throughout the region, and will advance Croatia's participation in the European/Atlantic communities. Like European Union President Prodi, who visited Zagreb January 14, the Secretary will also take the occasion to congratulate all Croatians, including the representatives of civil society, who have contributed to the democratic process and will discuss ways that the new government can work together.
