Paul R. Durette is the acting director of the Federal Protective Service (FPS) for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) within the Department of Homeland Security.
FPS supports the ICE mission by providing law enforcement and security services to over 1 million tenants and daily visitors to approximately 9,000 federally owned and leased facilities nationwide. In his role as acting director, Mr. Durette oversees the work of nearly 1500 employees, including more than 1200 law enforcement officers and 200 support personnel. Mr. Durette assumed his current position in August 2006.
Prior to assuming his current position Mr. Durette served as the deputy director for Operations for FPS. His responsibilities included oversight of all FPS operations activities nationwide, including oversight of all headquarters operational divisions.
Between April 2003 and February 2004, Mr. Durette served as the division director of Criminal Intelligence and Investigations at FPS headquarters. Mr. Durette has been a law enforcement officer for 20 years, and served 13 years with the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) before joining FPS. Mr. Durette’s career has included assignments to the Washington, D.C., Superior Court; assignments in the District of Vermont as court security coordinator, asset forfeiture specialist and threat investigator; and extensive experience in fugitive investigations including: USMS Major Case, Top 15 and international investigations.
Mr. Durette later served as a senior inspector in the Judicial Security Division at USMS headquarters where he managed three high profile national programs: Court Security, Witness Security and Protective Investigations. As assistant chief deputy in the District of Massachusetts, he was responsible for all operational functions in three district offices, including the Investigations Unit, the New England High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Fugitive Task Force and the physical security of the U.S. courthouses in Massachusetts. He also coordinated numerous sensitive organized crime proceedings, as well as the production and safekeeping of terrorist Richard Reid (“the shoe bomber”). Mr. Durette has served on USMS headquarters Merit Promotion Rating Panel and the Special Response Team Advisory Group, and the U.S. Attorney’s Anti-Terrorism Task Force.
