DECOMMISSIONING ACTIVITIES AT HADDAM NECK AND
YANKEE ROWE PLANTS TO BE DISCUSSED AT NRC MEETING ON NOV. 30
Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet with representatives of the Haddam Neck and Yankee Rowe nuclear power plants on Thursday, Nov. 30, to
discuss the status of ongoing decommissioning activities at the permanently shutdown facilities. The meeting, which will be open to the public, is scheduled to
begin at 10 a.m. in the Public Meeting Room at the NRC Region I office in King of Prussia, Pa.
Yankee Rowe, located in Rowe, Mass., and owned by the Yankee Atomic Electric Co., ceased operations in October 1991. Among the key activities currently
taking place at the plant is the construction of a "dry" spent fuel storage facility.
Haddam Neck is located in Haddam, Conn., and owned by Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Co. Connecticut Yankee announced in December 1996 that it
was permanently ceasing operation of the facility. One of the topics to be discussed regarding that plant is the possible release of a portion of the site for the
construction of a natural gas-fired power plant. Before any part of the site could be released, the NRC would have to determine that it contained no radioactivity
exceeding regulatory limits. Also to be discussed is Connecticut Yankee's plans for a "dry" spent fuel storage facility on the property.
