NRC TO MEET WITH UTILITY OFFICIALS ON NOVEMBER 14 TO DISCUSS D.C. COOK UNIT 1 RESTART ACTIVITIES

** REGIONAL ADMINISTRATOR'S NEWS BRIEFING AT 2:30 P.M. **

Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff members will meet with American Electric Power Company officials on Tuesday, November 14, to discuss the status of the utility's preparations for resuming operation of Unit 1 of the D. C. Cook Nuclear Power Station near Bridgman, Michigan.

Prior to the meeting, NRC Regional Administrator James E. Dyer will meet with news media representatives at 2:30 p.m. to discuss the agency's plans for reviewing the preparations for Unit 1 startup and for monitoring the plant as it resumes operation.

Mr. Dyer's news briefing will be in Room 209D in the Training Building at the D. C. Cook plant, which is at 7700 Red Arrow Highway between Bridgman and Stevensville.

The meeting between the NRC staff and utility officials will begin at 3 p.m. EST in the Training Building.

The NRC staff has been meeting periodically with utility officials to discuss the status of Unit 1 restart activities and the operational performance of Unit 2. This meeting is open to public observation, and NRC staff members will be available after the meeting to answer questions.

The plant has two reactor units. Unit 2 restarted in late June. Both units were shut down in September 1997 after an NRC design inspection questioned the capabilities of key plant emergency systems to meet their design requirements.
