NRC Names Manuel D. Cerqueira, M.d., to Head Advisory Committee on Medical Uses of Isotopes

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has appointed Manuel D. Cerqueira, M.D., as the new chair of the NRC Advisory Committee on the Medical Uses of Isotopes. Dr. Cerqueira has experience in both diagnostic nuclear medicine and nuclear cardiology. He is currently Associate Chief of Cardiology at the Georgetown University Medical Center and Professor, Departments of Medicine and Radiology, Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Dr. Cerqueira succeeds Judith Stitt, M.D., of the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine. Dr. Stitt, a radiation oncologist, served two full terms on the committee, the most recent one as chair. The Advisory Committee on Medical Uses of Isotopes advises NRC on policy and technical issues that arise in regulating the medical uses of radioactive material for diagnosis and therapy.

Dr. Cerqueira is a graduate of Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. He received his doctor of medicine degree from the New York University School of Medicine and took his postgraduate training in internal medicine, cardiology, and nuclear medicine at Bellevue Medical Center in New York City and at Yale-New Haven Hospital in Connecticut.

He has been at Georgetown since August 1994. Earlier, he taught at the University of Washington School of Medicine and held senior staff posts at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Seattle.
