No. 99-255 December 1, 1999 NRC to Hold Workshop on Reactor Entombment Option The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will hold a public workshop December 14 -15 in Rockville, Maryland, to discuss the feasibility of entombment as a reactor decommissioning option. The workshop will be in the auditorium of the Commission's Two White Flint North building, 11545 Rockville Pike, from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on December 14 and from 9:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. on December 15. Under the entombment option, after a reactor shuts down permanently, radioactive structures, systems and components are encased in a structurally long-lived substance, such as concrete. The entombed structure is appropriately maintained, and surveillance is continued until the radioactivity decays to a minimal level that permits unrestricted use of the site. An information paper discussing the technical feasibility of entombment is available on the NRC website at www.nrc.gov/NRC/COMMISSION/SECYS/index.html The workshop agenda is posted on the website at www.nrc.gov/RES/agenff.htm # # # # # | |||||||
