NRC to Meet With State Liaison Officers

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will meet with State Liaison Officers on December 1 and 2 in Rockville, Maryland, to discuss current matters of mutual interest. State Liaison Officers are appointed by the governors of the 50 states to provide a communication link between individual states and the NRC on a variety of nuclear-related issues.

Chairman Richard A. Meserve will deliver the keynote address.

Issues to be discussed during the meeting include: the Y2K status of licensed facilities; the effects of electric utility industry restructuring on NRC's reactor licensing and oversight program and the results of NRC's new pilot oversight program; reactor license renewals and transfers; decommissioning of nuclear facilities; the fuel facility accident in Tokaimura, Japan; spent fuel storage and transportation; nuclear waste and materials activities; external regulation of the Department of Energy; and NRC's threat assessment program and responses to potential malevolent acts involving nuclear material.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held in the auditorium of the agency's Two White Flint North building, at 11545 Rockville Pike, from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on the first day, and from 8:00 a.m. until noon the second day. For further information, interested persons should contact Spiros Droggitis, 301-415-2367.
