NRC OFFERS OPPORTUNITY FOR HEARING, WRITTEN COMMENTS
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is offering the opportunity for a hearing on the proposed transfer of the operating license for Three Mile Island Nuclear Station Unit I (TMI-1) in Pennsylvania.
As an alternative to seeking a hearing, interested persons may submit written comments regarding the license transfer. The deadline for a hearing application is January 11. Written comments must be filed by January 20.
TMI-1 is operated by GPU Nuclear Inc. Other owners listed on the present license are Metropolitan Edison Co., Jersey Central Power & Light Co., and Pennsylvania Electric Co. They seek to transfer the license to AmerGen Energy Co., a corporation owned by British Energy and Peco Energy Co., which recently reached agreement to acquire the Three Mile Island unit. The NRC staff is now reviewing the license transfer application, which was filed December 3.
Petitions for a hearing should be filed with the Secretary of the Commission, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 20555-0001, Attention: Rulemakings and Adjudications Staff. Written comments should be sent to the same address.
Copies of hearing requests also should be sent to David R. Lewis, counsel for General Public Utilities, at Shaw Pittman Potts & Trowbridge, 2300 N Street N.W., Washington, DC 20037-1128; to Kevin P. Gallen, counsel for AmerGen, at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP, 1800 M Street, N.W., Washington, DC 20036-5869; and to the General Counsel, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555. Persons seeking a hearing must meet the criteria set out in the NRC's regulations in Subpart M, Part 2 of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
Copies of the license transfer application are available at the NRC Public Document Room in the Gelman Building at 2120 L Street, N.W., Washington, D.C.; and at the local public document room located at the Law/Government Publications Section, State Library of Pennsylvania, Walnut Street and Commonwealth Avenue, Harrisburg, PA.
More information on the hearing opportunity may be found in a notice published in the December 21 edition of the Federal Register.
