The Honorable Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson, Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, has announced her acceptance of the position of President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, beginning next July.

Dr. Jackson will finish out her current NRC term, ending June 30. She joined the agency on May 2, 1995, being named Chairman by the President two months later.

In a statement to the managers and staff of the NRC, the Chairman stressed her determination over the next seven months to continue managing the regulatory improvements that are underway with undiminished attention. "I will do my utmost to ensure that the progress and achievements that have been made will continue," she declared.

Dr. Jackson told the staff she was pleased and honored to have been presented with the challenge of leading such an outstanding and highly respected university as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, which is located in Troy, New York.
