The American Consumer and the
Changing Structure of the Food System

May 3-5, 2000
Washington, DC, and Arlington, VA

The Economic Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture is celebrating the new millennium with a thoughtful, enjoyable, and entertaining event on the role of food in our lives, and a research conference on the changing structure of the food system.

The millennium event will be held in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, May 3, from 3 to 6 p.m. at USDA's Whitten Building and South Building. The event will begin with the debut of an ERS video, shown in Jefferson Auditorium in the South Building, that examines American eating patterns over the past 100 years. A roundtable will follow to discuss what people will eat during the next century, how food will be marketed, and what the structure of the food industry may look like. Immediately after the activities in Jefferson Auditorium, a reception will be held on the patio of the Whitten Building.

On May 4 and 5, the research conference will be held in the Hilton Arlington and Towers Hotel, in Arlington, Virginia. The objective of the conference is to investigate and take stock of causes and effects of increasing consolidation, concentration, and coordination, particularly stressing the role of final consumer demand in driving these changes in industry organization. On May 4, the conference will cover institutional perspectives; food industry trends and forces behind the change; and the economics of the changing structure of the food system. On May 5, the conference will be devoted to papers selected for their focus and relevance from among the cutting-edge research in the area. For information about the program and registration for the research conference, go to:

Registrants are invited to attend the millennium event on May 3.

The research conference is co-sponsored by the Food Marketing Institute, the Food Policy and Outreach Institute, the NE-165, the Farm Foundation, the Food Institute, the Retail Food Industry Center, and the Food Marketing Policy Center.
